Ten of Victoria's most cynical two-wheeled sadists lined up at the start of the July 8 Newton VCL, with invaluable VCL points guaranteed for all who completed 16 ascents of Saanichton's own Mur de Huy. The Wheeler cabal knew that this was a tremendous opportunity to come away with the win that had eluded us thus far this season, and the plan was to be bold and be aggressive. Dangermen Andrew McCartney and Fabian Merino, of Pro City and BSB (Broadstreet Cycles and not Backstreet Boys) respectively, were not to be taken lightly; however, we made sure we were on the front foot with ARuss and an incognito Matt Sharpe forcing the pace from the gun. Three or four laps in, the latest through the wheeler pipeline, Ian Brown (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ian_Brown), got separation up the ascent and Matt Sharpe quickly got his wheel. A bit of a sit up by the remaining Wheelers in the pack left the chasing to Fab and AMac. While Ian eventually succumbed to the climb, Matt used his steady power to build a solid lead on what was left of the group. A surge by AMac a few laps later dropped half of the pack, with only myself, ARuss, Fabian and AMac making up some semblance of a group. Commit to sit was plan for the remainder of the race, with the only real task to mark any non-wheeler attempts to bridge to Sharpie. With two to go, and the victory all but sewn up, I attacked over the climb. I was brought back by Fabian, with my effort unfortunately shelling ARuss. On the last lap, I attacked again through the start finish, and immediately got a gap. The sage advice of Mick Bryson ('head down and go') kept me focused on the remaining two minutes of the race. I know Fab has a sprint, and so I couldn't let up at any point. I decided to bury myself on the first section of the hill, in hopes I could ease up as I rounded the final bend two hundred meters or so from the line. What do you know? It worked out. Wheelers go one and two. Monkey removed from the back.
